Intense Pulsed Light

IPL was developed in the 1980's for the treatment of photo-damaged skin. Unlike laser devices that use a single wavelength of light, IPL uses a xenon flashlamp to generate intense pulses of broadband light at very high energy. Filters are used in the IPL device to restrict the actual wavelengths that are emitted. Thus, various IPL's have been developed with a range of filters depending on the application that the machine is used for.

For instance, a filter that lets out light of a shorter wavelength would be expected to treat melanin in sunspots, while a longer wavelength filter would let through light that would tend to heat collagen and penetrate more deeply to stimulate collagen remodelling.

Photodynamic Therapy for Acne and Sun Damaged Skin

The principle cause of acne is the obstruction of the opening of a pore (hair follicle) by dead skin cells and oil from overactive oil glands. This obstruction can lead to infection. Previously, the only way to treat infection in acne was antibiotics, either topically or orally administered.

Treating acne by Photodynamic therapy originated in America. The treatment works by applying a lotion called Amino Levulinic Acid, a light sensitising agent, which is then activated using Intense Pulse Light. The treatment improve moderate to severe infective acne.

Photo Dynamic Therapy is also a unique treatment for unhealthy sun damaged skin on the face and body. This treatment is particularly suited to those with roughened sunspots and pre-cancerous lesions on the skin.

How IPL PDT done?

Before undertaking PDT manual microdermabrasion preformed to remove dead skin cells and make it easier for the ALA to penetrate the skin. This eliminates the need for harsh solvents to remove the oils from the skin.

5-ALA is applied to the skin for at least 30 minutes prior to the procedure and allowed to soak in. You will be given special eye protection and be treated with two passes over your entire face with the IPL treatment head. Afterwards, a moisturizer and hi-potency sunscreen will be applied and you will be instructed to avoid sun and bright light exposure for a few days.

After treatment with IPL, the patient may experience more redness and scaling than with IPL alone.

Number of treatment required depends on your condition. 1-2 treatments spaced 4 weeks apart for the best results are recommended. Milder treatments may require more sessions but heal more quickly.

Who is a good candidate for photodynamic therapy?

The best candidates for PDT may be those with lighter or fair skin with sun damage.

You may not be a good candidate for photodynamic therapy if you have darker skin that tends to turn brown or discolor with certain light or laser treatments. You may also not be a good candidate for PDT if you are very sensitive to light, burn extremely easily, would be unable to stay out of sunlight for the required 24-48 hours, or are taking medications which may make you very sensitive to sunlight or light-based therapies or pregnant.

Make sure to advice during your consultation on any other medical conditions that may affect your procedure or overall wound healing or you have systemic lupus erythematosus, or suffer from porphyria, or have had a history of Staph or other skin infections in the recent past.
